Step 2: Read the Resting Voltage Before You Hook Up a Light

Let the battery sit overnight with nothing connected, then put a multimeter across the posts. A healthy 12-volt battery rests at about 12.6 volts. At 12.4 it is maybe three-quarters charged. Below 12.2 it needs a real charge, not a top-off, and under 11 volts means a battery that has been neglected long enough to have damage already. Knowing the starting number tells you whether you are maintaining or rescuing.

The six-volt crowd cuts every one of those numbers in half: 6.3 is full, and 5.8 and dropping means real work ahead. This is where a lot of old-car guys go wrong.
